About the Gamma Kappa Phi Seal
Reflecting on the history of the Gamma Kappa Phi seal design, which has evolved through changes from its original form. For the record, this is actually the fraternity’s school chapter seal for Silliman University, introduced in its original design format as first shown. The geometric composition consists of 15 rays circumferentially around the circle where Gamma Kappa Phi is written, with triangles in the center along the monogram ΓΚΦ. However, it did not convey its meaning; instead, it was a form of artistic symbol creation.
Silliman Chapter Seal

To begin its story, it was considered an ‘accident’ that led to its adoption as the official seal of the organization. In fact, it is regarded as a campus school anniversary celebration to showcase a symbol of the organization. This was created in 1970 by Daniel Villamena, a pioneering member of the Silliman University Chapter, which involved a complete modification of the original founding seal of Gamma Kappa Phi, first created in 1962 at Divine Word College in Tagbilaran.

Members from other regions visited Silliman, bringing copies of the Silliman chapter seal and introducing them to schools like Central Mindanao University, which was the first to adopt the design. Although they were not aware, for the sake of organizational symbolism, it spread like wildfire among the members. Secondly, there is a result of miscommunication and a lack of acknowledgment between school chapters, along with the absence of standardization. In the long run, the Silliman Chapter’s seal was officially adopted and used as the official Gamma Kappa Phi seal. It has undergone significant improvements through decades of graphic evolution, with changes and additions to its linear form, color styling, and geometric features, particularly the extension of rays around its circumference. Eventually, as it reached the final stage of its current version, it was widely adopted and became the final graphic composition of its copyright work. Whilst preserving the historical form of its creation, this version is a commemorative piece that would still be occasionally used.

The enhancement of the graphics composition of this seal executes the work of a professional Graphic Designer with formal studies in Graphic and Visual Design. Therefore, it aligns with the Graphics and Visual Theory of the image from print output and visual media, resulting in a high-resolution turnout. This thumbs down the graphic geometry and composition of the so-called Trademark of the other faction. Featuring an overflow of rays extending around the circumference. A flawed piece of work with a visibly dark appearance, featuring black outlines of blot-like linear geometry, spoils the blue font color of the ΓΚΦ Monogram by overlaying it on a red background triangle. Otherwise, it lacks the creator’s ability to apply the color combination theory of graphics. A work of a novice artist with no mathematical geometry and symmetry aptitude, or in Tagalog, obra na bara-bara at masakit sa mata.
